Eatwell Malate - An Honest Review
I received 6 variants of rice meals from Eatwell Malate. Which I am very grateful for. Thank you very much po!
When I received them I was like awwww cause I was touched because of the trust and confidence in me and went from awww to OMG real quick, how will I write this?? I mean. Come on! That's 6! But here goes nothin', challenge accepted. I am tough! (shows biceps lol)
I decided not to eat everything in one go. It's too much for both of us in one sitting. We divided them into three meals. Dinner when it arrived, next day's lunch and lunch the next day too cause we were waiting for the ring light to arrive. That's two variants for each meal. It'll be a waste not to use a ring light for the videos that we are planning to make. Yeah.
Paolo and I decided to make a Youtube channel...
I know.
(Screams really loud. HAHAHA!!!)
Anyway, I have to be calm and focus on my writing though my insides have a LOOOOT of emotions right now which an introvert like me is really slow in processing and has difficulty in taking in. Oh gosh.
When the food arrived. It is in a paper bag with the logo and social media accounts written all over it. I immediately opened the bag and saw these striking bright red of a packaging. It was nice. I liked that tone of red. Like if you were to place food trays on the table with different packaging, you won't miss that. You will see it first. Plus I like the logo design. It is simple to the eyes yet everything's there. From social media accounts, viand label to heating instructions which I should say, very "eater-friendly".
It arrived right after I had my flight so I was really hungry. Born and raised in the province, I tend to gravitate to vegetables and fish so I picked the laing and sweet and sour fish for our first meal. The packaging is really nice. You have to slide the red paper label to the left or right and it will reveal a microwaveable food container. The food was covered in a thin plastic attached to the main food container and it has a partition for the rice and viand.
Sleek.
I removed the paper covering and as per instruction, I should peel the cover a bit before putting it into the microwave. That I did. Placed them in the microwave oven one by one. Set the temperature on medium and set three minutes on the timer.
That familiar sound came and I removed my food from the oven. Almost all of the variants that I got emitted this fragrant smell right after I removed them from the microwave. I like that.
I proceeded to open that thin plastic covering and tasted the SWEET AND SOUR FISH first. It tastes like your typical, delicious sweet and sour fish but without too much of a breading which I like because there is actually fish in there! and the fish tasted fresh. It also has fresh onions, bell peppers, and pineapples which are sliced really nicely. It did not wilt or droop. It was beautifully presented.
I paired this with the LAING. At first, I thought Oh this would not taste good since the leaf shreds are larger compared to what I am accustomed to being a Bicolana. We usually dry it before cooking, like really dry it, shrinking it, and also the color will turn from green to a deep and dark brown color.
But I was wrong. Although the taste has a different take compared to the usual laing, It is surprisingly delicious. I'm not quite sure but I am guessing they add in dried fish in it? Cause I can taste that distinct flavor which took that laing to the right turn. Adding dried fish on vegetables with coco milk is normal in Bicol cuisine. It takes a different turn from the normal mild coconut milk flavor but is delicious. If you also want your laing to kick it up on the spiciness on the next notch, they provided you with a chili that you can crush! And I almost forgot to mention that it has also some pork bits in it for added flavor.
The next day for lunch, we chose to eat the SPICY CHICKEN KALBI and BURGER STEAK.
Following the same procedures, I heated them in the oven for exactly three minutes on medium.
That Burger Steak patty itself is meaty and like the Beef Kebab I feel like it has just the right amount of flour to keep it together. You will know that you are really eating meat and no extenders. If you are into a protein-based diet, you will like this. It has lots of mushrooms too and has a light gravy though it's not that much flavorful so we added a bit of salt, no problem at all. I ate this simultaneously with the Spicy Chicken Kalbi.
Which I love,
love..
love.
Upon opening that plastic covering, I smelled that flamboyant, familiar, Korean food smell which most of us love! haha! Gochujang! (blame it on K-dramas!) The chicken meat was roasted a bit giving it that faint, smokey flavor. That first bite was a delight to behold! The chicken meat was tender. The sauce is just right. It's not that spicy nor too sweet so it's perfect even for kids and for people who don't have tolerance for anything spicy. I love this one promise! lol. That rice was perfect for it. Paolo and I finished everything lol!
So for our last day since we are down to two variants only. (Eatwell packed rice meals can last you for more or less a week) We decided to eat it for lunch earlier and also decided to immediately record a video for our first ever VLOG. Yes. Vlog. With a V! Haha! With the newly arrived ring light for more spunkiness.
People trusted us and that also pushed us to tap and explore more. Hence, this infamous video logs in the making. We will also be launching it soon so stay tuned :-)
Anyway, for our last Eatwell meals, we have the PORK LIEMPO and BEEF KEBAB.
Since I am a fan of Mediterranean food, I immediately bent over to the Beef Kebab. It has two medium, meaty sized-kebabs that comes with a garlic sauce. I love that pungent, distinct Arabic smell. I appreciate these kinds of food as I've mentioned in the video. I love their spices and find them fragrant and even unique in how they incorporate them into their dishes. Eatwell's Beef Kebab is meaty like the Burger Steak. I can smell a bit of a Masala mix on it. (Correct me if I'm mistaken Eatwell haha!) Not much extender or flour too, I can really bite on to real meat. I was just a bit confused with the garlic sauce, I am not sure where that faint and mellow bitter taste came from. Maybe from fresh garlic then strained before placing it in that box and when reheated, a chemical reaction took place and maybe it's what causing it. I'm not quite sure. But in general, it's leaning on to a subtle sweet side and a different take on a garlic sauce as a whole.
The Pork Liempo really flirted with me with the smell my Lord. As I was eating that Beef Kebab, that smell was inviting me to quickly head over to it next! Lol!
And it was no error.
I LOVE IT. The meat was tender. IT HAS NO FUNKY AND BAD PORK SMELL. Which I am really meticulous about. After stopping eating pork in 2016 and eating them again in 2020, my palate and my olfactory nerves became super sensitive to even a slight bad stench from pork meat. I was actually praying for this pork liempo not to have it and Hallelujah! My prayers were answered. Thank God! Hahahahha! Otherwise, How can I have the heart to write it here? lol!
That sweet sauce and smokey burnt flavor from roasting it is everything! After the video recording, my husband and I ate it with that pork fat! lol! That warm, bed of rice complements the dish well. Man, it was good. This is also my favorite from those six variants! That atsara is a surprisingly lovely bonus!
OKAY. It's sad that our three-day journey with Eatwell has come to an end. lol. Now I really have to fix dinner, cook rice, wash the dishes. haha!
I actually came to a realization of the goals that Eatwell is manifesting thru their products, how it is presented, even with the packaging.
Did you know that Eatwell food is freshly prepared in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) certified commissary? I don't know what you make out of that but man, I fully understand it even with the terminologies and I felt safe especially now that covid is proliferating, that the food I'm eating are SAFE and CLEAN.
You can also store these in the refrigerator and it will last for about a week. So if you are living alone and is really busy, you do not have time to cook. And for someone living alone, cooking is not practical and costly, considering the ingredients, time, energy, gas, electricity that you need to pitch in. Sometimes, you just do not have the time to go outside to buy your every meal. You don't feel safe either. (Covid and stuff) So, it's really convenient for you to just store a week-long stock of food that is clean, healthy, and cheap. Plus, you just need to pop it in the microwave for three minutes? No big deal. Instant healthy meal huh?
I love that the concept of this business is not just providing cheap, clean, safe, and healthy food but a SOLUTION to the fast-paced lives of people who of course, needs to eat too.
And EAT WELL. Obviously!
Thank you EatWell Ph and Eatwell Malate!
